How can One Improve Vocabulary for Writing??

The greatest writers are those with the wildest vocabulary because they are better be able to choose the most appropriate word for what they want to say. So to be a good writer of English, you will need a broad, wide and deep vocabulary.
The English language has over half a million words so there is no end of learning, but if you only learnt one new word every day, you would know over 1,400 more words than you do now before the end of form 5. That probably is not going to be enough, so perhaps you should aim for a few more than that.
You may keep a vocabulary book to record all the new words you learn. Set yourself a realistic target to reach before the end - of - year examinations. 300 would be realistic for many, but some of you might think 200 more manageable. Those who think they are really clever might think 200 more manageable. Those who think they are really clever might target 500 or more - atleast 10 a week. Make sure it is a target that you will achieve. If you target for 1000 words and do not get there, you will only depress yourself. Far better to aim for 300 and find at the end of the year that you have reached 350!!
By the way, most malaysians are not interested in improving their vocabulary and tend to use the same words repetitively in both writing and speaking.....many think that their ability to converse in simple English is already more than anything but many do not think including phrases and idioms in their conversation and writing will create a good impression to anyone who are connected to them in any ways, but remember that this phrases and idioms are also need to be learnt. So do not forget these useful expressions.
Learning vocabulary for writing is not the same as learning vocabulary for examinations. For objective examination purposes you only need to recognise the word and know its meaning - it is called passive vocabulary. What you need for writing is words that you think of to apply in a certain situation. - your active vocabulary.
That is why you always need to learn how to use new words as well as the meaning. The meaning alone will do well enough for your passive vocabulary, but when you want to use for writing ( your active vocabulary), you will also need to know how to use them. It is a good idea to put all your words into new sentences as soon as you meet them. Use them - or lose them!!

La vita'e bella La vita'e amore ( Life is Beautiful, Life is Love)

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath an old willow tree. I felt the world was dragging me down. Then, a young boy approached me, all tired from play. He stood right before me with his head tilted down and said with great excitement. " Look what I found!" In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight. The flower had wilted. I faked a small smile and then looked away. But instead of going away he sat next to me...

He said, " It sure smells pretty and it's beautiful, too. That's why I picked it; here, it's for you." The weed before me was dying or dead. But, I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower.

Instead of placing the flower in my hand, he held it up mid - air. It was then that I noticed for the every first time that the boy could not see.I heard my voice quiver. I thanked him for picking the very best one.

" You're welcome," he smiled, and then he ran off to play.

Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see. I vowed to see the beauty in life. I held that wilted flower up to my nose and breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose.......

The Straight A's Fever......

Dear students,

You sat for the PMR examination two months ago and since that day you have been waiting for tomorrow a day where all the questions will be answered.....I know the questions that will come to your mind at this moment....."Will I get A for Sejarah?',"Gosh!!! I What am I going to get for my English?" ...."Will I get straight As???...hahahahaha

The PMR results will be out tomorrow....I could see that all of you are nervous to death....hahahah....it is ok...it is just PMR and there are more challenges are waiting for you in future....if you score in flying colours take that as a way to move forward in your life.......and if you do not get a result that is up to your mark....its ok, you know how much effort you have put in it....there is no point crying over the spilt milk and it is not too late to mend your mistakes .....you can make a fresh start and prove you are worth it in your SPM....for those who score excellent results, do not get too excited with your results as it is time to pull up your socks and maintain your excellence in SPM....as SPM is no joke and you have to really work hard for it.........

I know that some of you have been working really really hard to obtain straight As......and what if you do not get straight As?? What will you do if your result is smudged with one or two Bs.....Does that really matter to you....???? Take my advice a few Bs in your result does not make you stupid... It is not the end of the world...At the end of the day if you get straight as and you do not know how to present yourself.. if you do not know how to communicate with others....if you do not even know how to speak in proper English....do you think people will look up to your straight As.....???? Trust me in reality when you start looking for a job or apply to a higher learning institution educational excellence is not the only criteria that will be evaluated there are so many things that will evaluated....your extra c0curricullar activity, communication skills....problem solving skills etc etc etc.....remember you will not be able to stand tall with straight As alone...there are so many things that you have to work on....and remember nobody is perfect.....so don't be dissappointed if a few A's are missing in your results and move on with your life.......Good Luck....

your teacher.......

Form 3 Lit - Com Course for teachers in the Land of Borneo

My groupmates and I are demonstrating one of the ways to conduct literature lessons. It was interesting, trust me it was interesting.

Tengku Irene - presenting the novel 'How I met myself'

Mr.Ng.Yew Kee - presenting the "Leisure"

I was one of the fortunate JUs to be selected to attend the Form 3 Literature Component course which was conducted in Miri from 1st till 4th November 2011. This was the third and the last cycle for the latest literature component.... 20 JUs throughout Sarawak and 30 from Labuan and Sabah attended the course. It was very enlightening as various issues were discussed. The officers from Bahagian Pembangunan Pendidikan were very friendly. Thanks to Mr. Ng Yew Kee, Tengku Irene and Diana for making the sessions interesting. Teachers were allowed to give comments and recommendations on improvising the modules and making it more interesting. Teacher had hands - on experience by experimenting the activities in the modules. The following are the components to be taught to form 3 students in 2012

Poem

a) A fighters line

b) Leisure

Novel

a) Around the world in eighty days - Sarawak

b) How I met myself

c) The railway children

Though Sarawak will be doing around the world in eighty days, the officers from KPM said that the schools are given choice to choose the novels that they find to be easier for the students. However, the decision should be made by the school authorities. The JUs are required to conduct their training sessions in their district. I will be conducting a training session for the form 3 teachers in Bintulu on next year in January. Will upload the modules soon.....

Motivation for Teachers 1

Teach to influence lives....

If we were to name great teachers of all time, what qualities of theirs would stand out?? We would probably conclude that they didn’t just teach others; they influenced them. Their lives, as well as their teachings, still impact individuals and societies. What they taught was simply an extension of who they were. They influenced others because of their character.
Devotion, commitment ,compassion, diligence – these qualities were undoubtedly the disciplines of their lives, the dynamic that made them Hall of Fame teachers. They were more than purveyors of facts or figures. They modeled a value system that causedothers to remember them for what they stood for as well as what they taught.
Make it your goal to affect not only the minds of your students but their lives as well. Influence them,.Lead them, let your personal disciplines be a classroom where your students will learn how to live, and not just how to spell or count. If that’s your goal, your work will go on long after you’re gone.
Great teachers do not produce a product; they produce an effect….Let us follow their foot path.. we might not become great teachers but we can atleast try to be a ‘teacher’.

Finally I have completed my 10th module, that is on proverbs which I have been working on for the past 2 months....Thank God...Finally it is done....The purpose of this module is to share my passion on proverbs with my students and also to expose my students to the usage of proverbs in writing. The module contains 35 tasksheets which will help students to explore proverbs using various interesting ways...The objective of using any module can only be achieved when proper teaching strategy is used, therefore I am planning to use explicit teaching strategies to complement this module so that learning will be optimum . Teaching English with Songs and Music

The hows and whys of teaching with songs and musics

Here are some great teaching tips for songs.

Some people have asked me for some of the activities I do with Music in class. Here are some of them:

Filling in the Blanks
There are many ways blanks can be used. I give students lyrics with some blanks (specially the parts that have to do with the subject we're covering in class). They listen to song once, at the second time they fill in the blanks - as much as possible. Finally, they listen to it another time to check if they got the blanks filled in correctly. This activity takes up to 20 mins.

Blanks can be very helpful when teaching subjects like Simple Past. Pick up a song that has may verbs in the past tense, blank them out and give in parenthesis the verbs in their base form. Have the students complete the song rewriting the past tense of each verb. This will help them memorize the past form of regular and irregular verbs. (can be used with any verb tense)
Teaching ESL in a non-English speaking country is a challenge. Even advanced students sometimes tend to go their mother-tongue in the classroom. So I found a way to keep them in touch with English even outside the classroom: I asked them to bring in a song they liked, a song of the moment. I put some blanks in the lyrics and they didn't get everything after the first time they listened to it. So I had them take the copies home and try to listen to that song anywhere possible (in the car, CDs, anywhere) and bring it in to me the in the following week with the blanks filled in. I also told them to try not to look for the lyrics anywhere else but try to listen to the song itself. It worked out pretty well.

Strips of Papers
Depending on the length of the song, you can cut the lyrics in strips of paper and have a contest. I always divide my classes in two groups. So the group that gets the lyrics with less mistakes after the second time (even after the first time, depending on the level of the class), gets a treat, or whatever you feel like rewarding them with.

Relaxation
I usually bring in some celtic, classic or just instrumental music on test days and put it on very low. I noticed that when this procedure was done, students relax more and feel more comfortable during the test(informal monthly test).

Guided fantasy
I usually do this procedure on a first-day class, to "break the ice". Nothing personal, but for this procedure I use ENYA (who sings a little bit of folk and celtic music). I prepare a text, very imaginative, something that can take many different points of view, and read it out loud while the song's being played. Students have their eyes closed and I ask them to imagine exactly what I'm reading and let their imagination flows along with the song. This is very relaxing!

1. HOW DIFFICULT IS THE SONG?
Some factors to note are speed (fast or slow), the clarity of the vocalization, the amount of repetition, the vocabulary and metaphors. For a cloze task:
If the song has simple, repetitive lyrics, you can blank out more words;
If the song is more difficult, you will want to blank out fewer words;
An idea to try: blank out only the beginning or only the end of a phrase.

2. WHAT IS THE PROFICIENCY LEVEL OF THE CLASS?
For a cloze task:
If the song is for beginning level class, you will want to blank out fewer words, but if it's for a more advances class you can blank out more words.

3. WHAT KIND OF ENGLISH LESSON DO THE LYRICS SUGGEST?

Simple, repetitive songs often contain grammatical patterns.
More difficult songs contain interesting vocabulary and idioms.
Look for homophones, homographs and homonyms, as well as typical fast speech pronunciation.
Look for conversation and writing topics. Is there a message, theme, or story that students can discuss, explain, debate, and write about?

Using music in the classroom is a great way to liven up listening activities.
I'd like to add a couple of steps that make the listening activities more effective.

1. Start with a focusing activity. A focusing activity is anything that will get students thinking about the subject of the song (listening.) These skills need to be learned in a new language, they don't come naturally. In addition, if the students have made guesses beforehand, it is much easier to get them involved in looking for the answers to their guesses.
Here are some examples of pre-listening focusing lessons.

A. Speculation: Put the title of the song on the board. Have students in pairs make guesses about what the song is about and write them down on a piece of paper. Then have students pass their papers a group to the left and have them read them. Students must guess if the other students guess is the same or different than theirs.

B. Pictures: Get a picture of the performers. Have students make up a story about them.(Or) get a picture that relates to the subject matter of the song. Students must guess about the song.

C. Take vocabulary from the song. Step 1: Put eight or ten words at random on your black/white board. Students get up and ask each other what the words mean. Step 2: Have students in groups of 3 or 4 write a quick story that uses the words. Step 3: Play the tape. Students must shout STOP any time they hear one of the new vocab words. First student to shout correctly gets a point for their team.

D. Cut the song into strips. Give each student one strip to memorize. Students put the strips in their pockets. Students get up and tell each other their part of the song, without looking at their part or showing their part to anyone else. Then you can do many things: you could have students listen to the tape and put down the names of their classmates in the order they hear the parts from before (pretty hard) to having the students take out their strips, listen to the song and then put them on a table in order as they hear their part of the song.

E. Write up a set of questions around the topic. Have students ask each other the questions. Or, more advanced, choose two songs of a similar theme(or first and second half of the song), split the class into two teams. Have each group listen to their part and make up questions. Trade tapes and students just listen to the other group's song. Finally pair each student with a member of the opposite team and have them take turns asking their questions.

Try this, you will definitely make a difference....

Restu Ilmu Ceremony in SMK Bintulu

The students of SMK Bintulu will be sitting for the PMR examination tommorrow. In order, to give them last minute tips and to remind them the dos and donts a ceremony was held in a simple scale.. However the real purpose of the ceremony was to wish the students 'goodluck' by the teachers ... This year It was done with a difference, parents were invited to the school to attend this ceremony and to bless their children. I was deeply touched by the gesture of my students who came and hugged me and sought for my forgiveness.. I tried my very best to control my tears as I do not want to be teased by them next year hahahah...thank God I didn't although my 3B tried really hard to do so.... I hope all of them will do well in their examination and excel in flying colours.....I will pray for all them.....thanks for being wonderful students throughout the year and

3B The Cream Of The Crops

I was assigned to be the form teacher of class 3B in the beginning of this year. At first I was furious and reluctant to accept the 'burden' of being a form teacher as I was already burdened with other activities and duties at school. However, after giving it a deep thought I decided to take the challenge for once as I have never been a form teacher all this while. Colleagues told me that being a 'father' to a good class is much much easier!!! but they were wrong.. I faced different genre of challenges....my cute students are very loud and they speak their mind. Sometimes they laugh for no reason for almost one whole period and sometimes the class will be extremely quiet....The most challenging task was asking them to clean the classroom every morning...Phewwwwwwwwwww!!!!! it was very difficult to make them sweep the floor every morning ( Thanks to Amanda - never sweeps the floor until the teacher calls her name) also thanks to Janet,Chun Ling and Wie Chien who swept the floor throughout the year on their "duty - day" without me asking them to do it......on the other hand I have Kevin, Michelle, Develyn and Albert who is suppose to clean the windows on every Monday and Friday..when I ask them to clean the windows on Monday they will say that they will do it on Friday and vice versa.....the windows will be crystal clean when I start to yell at them.....hahahaha.....I also have other witty characters in my class such as Timothy and Loo Cheah Hong... They are our clowns and they complement each other....not forgetting the 3 stooges of my class - Irvine, Halif and Francis....owh my Monitor is Vernon Hau and his assistant is Jennifer...she has a very loud and clear voice. The boys in my class are really scared of her ..sometimes I just love to see her yelling at the boys on top of her voice.....I also have angels in class 3B Esther, Tang Siaw Ting, Chew Jia Xin and Chieng Siew Hong, just to name a few..........my sleeping beauties are Amanda, Hii Chan Jie and sometimes Michelle Wong. They seem to be soooooooo sleepy the whole day. Sometimes I wonder what do they do at night? Hahahaha....After being their form teacher for almost 9 months I really felt that I had a wonderful year with them although they have won "Anugerah kelas terbersih" for only once ...For me 3B is the best.....and our momoland will come to an end soon... I wish all of you good luck for the coming PMR examination and I will pray for all of you.....for those whom I didn't mention your name her, it doesn't mean that I do not remember you...I just don't have the time to type all your names....hahahaha...gosh I"m going to miss all of you.......

A Picture Says a Thousand Words.

Photobucket

The students of class 3B were given a project few months ago. They were divided into 5 groups and were required to identify 30 proverbs with their meanings and were asked to use pictures to convey the hidden meanings in the proverbs. The students really had fun doing this project. These are the outcomes of the classroom project. They have put a lot of efforts in completing their project. The best was Amanda's group. They used newspaper cuttings as pictures for their proverbs instead of printing out pictures from internet...

Kudos to them!!!.

Embaressed by yor speeling????

The folllowing article is both humorous and scary It points out some of the silly quirks in the English language.

Having learned English spelling and grammar in elementary school I have no sympathy for those who cannot spell BY THE TIME THEY REACH the UNIVERSITY LEVEL. They are either stupid or lazy or both and to give in to their inabilities and accept their careless writing would be a travesty, in my opinion.

But I admit that our language is pretty hard to explain at times and I greatly admire all of you who have studied English and learned to speak, read and write it better than many, many of our "educated" citizens.

Note: For those of you who are just learning English, please be advised that the article contains a great many intentionally misspelled words...which of course, is the gist of the article Enjoy!

LONDON (Reuters) - Embaressed by yor spelling? Never you mind.

Fed up with his students' complete inability to spell common English correctly, a British academic has suggested it may be time to accept "variant spellings" as legitimate.
Rather than grammarians getting in a huff about "argument" being spelled "arguement" or "opportunity" as "opertunity," why not accept anything that's phonetically (fonetickly anyone?) correct as long as it can be understood?
"Instead of complaining about the state of the education system as we correct the same mistakes year after year, I've got a better idea," Ken Smith, a criminology lecturer at Bucks New University, wrote in the Times Higher Education Supplement.
"University teachers should simply accept as variant spelling those words our students most commonly misspell."
To kickstart his proposal, Smith suggested 10 common misspellings that should immediately be accepted into the pantheon of variants, including "ignor," "occured," "thier," "truely," "speach" and "twelth" (it should be "twelfth").
Then of course there are words like "misspelt" (often spelled "mispelt"), not to mention "varient," a commonly used variant of "variant."
And that doesn't even begin to delve into all the problems English people have with words that use the letters "i" and "e" together, like weird, seize, leisure, foreign and neighbor.
The rhyme "i before e except after c" may be on the lips of every schoolchild in Britain, but that doesn't mean they remember the rule by the time they get to university.
Of course, such proposals have been made in the past. The advent of text messaging turned many students into spelling neanderthals as phrases such as "wot r u doin 2nite?" became socially, if not academically, acceptable.
Despite Smith's suggestion, language mavens are unconvinced. John Simpson, the chief editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, says rules are rules and they are there for good reason.
"There are enormous advantages in having a coherent system of spelling," he told the Times newspaper.
"It makes it easier to communicate. Maybe during a learning phase there is some scope for error, but I would hope that by the time people get to university they have learnt to spell."
Yet even some of Britain's greatest wordsmiths have acknowledged it's a language with irritating quirkiness.
Playwright George Bernard Shaw was fond of pointing out that the word "ghoti" could just as well be pronounced "fish" if you followed common pronunciation: 'gh' as in "tough ," 'o' as in "women" and 'ti' as in "nation."
And he was a playright.

PEARLS OF WISDOM

Don't love the Heart that hurts you and don't hurt the Heart that loves you.

Don't cry over anyone who won't cry over you.

Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget.

Most people walk in and out of your life, but only friend's leave footprints in your heart.

True friendship "never" ends. Friends are forever.

People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.

If we are incapable of finding peace in ourselves, it is pointless to search elsewhere.

The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof.
A change of heart changes everything.

Our greatest glory is not in ever falling, but in rising every time we fall.

You only live once - but if you work it right, once is enough.

One generation plants trees, and the next enjoys the shade.

It is difficult to live in the present, ridiculous to live in the future, and impossible to live in the past. Nothing is as far away as one minute ago.
